Igor is the deuteragonist of Count Duckula. He's a hunched-backed, anthropomorphic vulture, with a deep, slow voice.

Details[]

Igor acts in the manner of a traditional horror servant based on the stock character Igor, and adds a decidedly dark amount of powdered sugar to Duckula's breakfast in the morning. While living in the manor, Igor takes care of keeping the mansion running.

He greatly dislikes his master's behaviour, and often encourages him to act in a far more ghastly manner. Although he will generally obey Duckula's specific orders (thwarting Duckula's attempt to stop the first Duckula becoming a vampire only because he was not explicitly ordered not to), he remains convinced that, if he could only talk Duckula into biting, maiming, torturing and otherwise brutalising people, he would return to the "good old days" of the previous counts who behaved more like evil vampires.

It's very likely that Igor is the same character as "Igorth" in "The Rest is History", as we have several points for his age -- or at least how long he's been serving Duckula. In "Family Reunion", Igor states it will be his 8th reunion, which takes place every 100 years. In the same episode, he mentions how he's served the family for "800 years, give or take a decade or so". In "Arctic Circles", he mentions again how he's served the family for "seven-and-a-half centuries". In "Sawdust Ring", the most specific time of 724 years is given. Finally, the official 1990 Count Duckula annual repeats 800 years in his description once more. While the math is not exact, the consistency in age range is very notable. Considering that the series takes place during the years it aired, and the first Count Duckula was turned into a vampire in 1199, Igor himself may have have turned Duckula into a vampire or at least have been around near the time of it. He seems to be immortal, or there is something else supplying his life force.

Personality[]

Igor is very gloomy, stoic, and generally unanimated in terms of personality.

He has a dry sense of humor and hates things like "bless you," "nice," "good," and "lovely" -- such words make him cringe, as he prefers the darker and more sinister side of life. He himself speaks in a formal manner, showing an advanced vocabulary. In "Hardluck Hotel", Igor goes on holiday to a rundown and dismal hotel, where he sits in complete darkness, enjoying the sounds of the damp creeping up the walls.

Murder, death, and blood are topics he is very open and encouraging to. He admires evil of all kinds, even the little steps he thinks Duckula takes or the times he becomes an actual vampire causes him to be overjoyed. He is persistent, nostalgia ridden, and simply longing for the old days. Igor does have his moments of softness, sometimes caring for Duckula and Nanny more than he will admit, but at heart, he is evil. He doesn't show many signs of change, but at the very least has become more passive.

Many years ago, when the current Duckula wasn't around, he seemed to have more expression to him, shown well in the episode "Dear Diary". Igor's conflict with Duckula is a large part of how he behaves now. On one hand, he is ever so disappointed in his master for not being like the previous incarnations. On the other, despite this, Igor is incredibly patient and loyal with the current Count Duckula. He is visibly upset whenever Duckula sells him off, especially so in "Arctic Circles". Perhaps he believes someday his attempts will succeed -- and either way, he has served the Duckulas for centuries, and that will not stop now. Interestingly, he does not desire to be the count, only a mere butler, demonstrated in "Prime-Time Duck".

He is snarky with Nanny and Duckula, and can even become aggressive towards civilians. He is intelligent, though, and knows when to keep his mouth shut.

Igor is very cunning, sly, and sneaky. He keeps a lot of secrets, lying subtlety about things -- sometimes just "stretching the truth" about his deeds, but sometimes blatant ones, such as in "Bloodsucking Fruit Bats of the Lower Amazon", where he essentially manipulates Duckula into taking the castle to the Amazon so he could find a bat to bite Duckula and turn him into a "proper" vampire.
